12.6.2002 - The December meeting was well received by most everyone. It was the last meeting of the year and all in all it was a good one. Grifter handed out all the free shit he collected at ApacheCon. T-shirts, lanyards, Java rings, and Con CDs were flung into the group as people desperately raised their hands for something they wanted. Devestate gave a talk on Taking Back Windows Using Litestep, Kampf gave one on WEP and the future of wireless, and Grifter graced us with a talk on IPSec Policies.

I think there was something having to do with hats this month. First off, Kweejee showed up in a blatantly homosexual neon rainbow colored hat. I don't know about everyone else, but after looking at that thing, I couldn't get Fresh Prince of Bel Air out of my head. Then on a slightly more predictable note, F8l Error showed up in a Santa hat. F8l always seems to surprise us with his appearances.

Well, that's it, as far as I can remember. See you all next year. -Manic Velocity

11.1.2002 23.47.49 MST - The November meeting has come and gone and we are only one meeting away from entering 2003. Hopefully the December meeting will be a good one so we can end this year with a bang. We only had one talk this month, but I hear that others are working on things, so I'll cross my fingers.

I gave a talk on Windows Security Templates. I figure that I will start to do talks on general security topics, so people can begin to secure their own machines. I tried to go with the hands on demo approach but I don't think it worked too well. It's just too hard to get thirty people to crowd around a laptop. We need to get a projector, or possibly move the meeting to a place where we can have more of an academic environment and where we can shut off the lights so that a projector will work.

Rudeboy brought his green laser pointer with him this month, and I have to say that no matter how long laser pointers have been around, I could never get tired of this one. The range on this thing was unreal. We went outside and pointed it at Moroni on the top of the temple, still bright. Pointed it at the apartment buildings behind the conference center, there it was. But the koolest part was the fact that you could see the beam. You could see it really well if you let it hit your breath, but that wasn't really necessary. Anyway, it was fun.

Something I think I will mention just for the hell of it. When I made the comment last month that I was burnt out, all kinds of people started saying all kinds of different crap. Not people from Salt Lake, but from around the country. I never realized what kind of following our meeting has, all I know is that within the week of me posting that, people on the Defcon Forums were asking if the 2600SLC meeting was going away, or saying that it wasn't as good anymore. It was mentioned on the websites and message boards of other meetings and all kinds of crap like that. I tried to let people know as best I could that we are still going strong, I just don't always want to give a talk. But for those of you that I didn't see posting things; We are still here, we are still going strong, we're not going anywhere.

Anyway, I just thought I'd say that. Also it has been brought to my attention that the San Antonio and Los Angeles 2600 meetings have started giving talks. December will be the first month of talks for LA. The word is out, our system works, let's hope we can start presenting talks from other meetings soon. We'll improve on what we see and make the community better, even if it kills me. That's all I have to say for this month, write a talk if you haven't already. See ya in December . - Grifter

10.4.2002 23.12.01 MST - October means Halloween. That is why Lilith dressed like Freddy Krueger. It wasn't a bad meeting this month. We had a good turnout and some things to keep us busy. Another month of one official talk and one unofficial, no wait two unofficial talks.

Manic Velocity did a talk about OSX. And for those who cared to stare at my laptop screen for a little while I played my defcon speech which arrived in the mail a few weeks ago from the sound of knowledge. I will get it posted as soon as I get the tape to A for capture and divx conversion. A 593MB windows media file just won't cut it. rudeboy gave a synopsis of ToorCon which was very interesting. I need to get myself to more cons.

People need to write more talks. I haven't written one in the last two months because I'm burned out. What's your excuse? I feel like I have to write a talk almost every month. I shouldn't have to feel that way. Ii know you guys are smart, stand up and prove it to everyone else. I am trying to remotivate myself and get a few things done, like this update, but it's not easy. I got up in front of a bunch of people at Defcon and told them how great 2600SLC was, now let's keep things moving. I have noticed that people have been leaving early the past few months, as in, right after the talks are done. The talks are there so that when they are over we can have more technical conversations. It's hard to have a technical conversation when no one is around. Most of those that left early missed Rudeboys talk.

I don't really have much else to say. I've just noticed that lately, and it's annoying me. So just keep it in mind at the next meeting and try to stick around. Write a talk. See ya in November. Bring Presents, my Birthday is only a couple days after the meeting. - Grifter

9.6.2002 22.57.39 MST - September was a really laid back meeting. People showed up and hung out most of the time. This update sucks, blah blah blah. Anyway, we had a decent meeting with no real agenda. I have been extremely unmotivated since Defcon. I think all of the preparation leading up to the big event just wiped me out. I was and still am starting to believe that this hacker thing is becoming almost like a full time job. Update this, write that, read this, plan for that, print this, design that, request this, buy that, e-mail him, e-mail her . You get my point. So what I'm trying to get at is, I didn't write a talk this month.

I was supposed to have a debate on the ethics of Dumpster Diving with this guy from Salt Lake that read my article in 2600, but he didn't show. Stauf gave a presentation/talk though. He talked about the SLC Wireless project. Which is basically like every other wireless project, yet completely different, and ten times kooler because it's ours. I'll post details in the texts section.

People tried to be funny with geeksyndicate.net stickers. People left early again, and I was still attractive. That's all. I don't feel like talking about September anymore, remember, motivation. See ya in October. - Grifter

8.9.2002 22.36.25 MST - August is gone. It wasn't a bad way to start a month, I have to say that. With Defcon on the first Friday of the month, we pushed the meeting back a week. Defcon one week, 2600 meeting the next, we just can't seem to get enough of each other.

Most of this meeting was spent talking about Defcon or the things that happened there. "So and so soaped the fountain...so and so had a dildo on his forehead", you know, typical Defcon stuff. Some people brought their badges and a bunch wore their t-shirts. I handed out programs and CDs to all of those that could not attend.

We had one official talk this month, and one unofficial. Serial gave a talk entitled "Intro to Logic Circuits", and Kampf talked about the Defcon Scavenger Hunt. It was more a debrief on how things went, since some people helped get things setup that didn't make it to Defcon. We sat around for a few hours and most people went home a little early. That's basically all that went down. See ya in September. - Grifter

7.5.2002 23.19.31 MST - Bye Bye July. The July meeting is over and marks the last meeting before the 2600SLC crew rolls out to Defcon 10. We didn't talk about Defcon too much at this meeting since all of the planning that needed to be done has already been done. Tied up a few loose ends and warned those without rooms or rides that the clock is ticking. I am amazed at the number of people that are going this year. I think it's great, It's going to be nice to have Salt Lake City representing at Defcon. Since I'll be giving a speech at Defcon this year it'll be nice to have the support of some friends, this way when no one shows up I won't look like a total tool.

The meeting went well this month. We had about 6-8 new people, which was nice. We had three talks. Rudeboy gave a talk on IPSec. It was a good talk and well prepared, I don't know a whole lot about IPSec but it seemed to be a good primer. It was a little technical so I think some people shut their brains off. Serial taught everyone how to become a ninja. He wrapped a shirt and scarf around his head and talked about the history of Ninjas and how they "kick some ass!" Some people liked it and thought it was funny. Others thought it had no place at a 2600 meeting, which is probably true, but I laughed a few times. I gave a talk on Null Sessions and Enumeration. I thought it went over well and I even brought some handouts. However the talk was another that was a little technical and the handouts were just command line output so I think some people shut their brains off for that too.

I said we had three talks earlier but I guess technically there were four. I revisited the Script Kiddies and Scenewhores talk from last April since we're about to head to Defcon. I just wanted to get the point across that our worth, as hackers, is based upon our intelligence and what we contribute to the community. Not just what we take.

I do however want to bring up something that kind of bothered me. I have noticed that within the last 2-3 meetings that people have started to not pay attention during the talks. Not everyone, and it's not the same people every time. It has just started to piss me off. When we started doing talks at 2600 it was understood that whether you wanted to listen or not, or whether you thought you could gain something from the talk or not, that you should at least have the decency to keep your mouth shut. I can tell you from experience that picking a topic and putting together a talk is not an easy thing to do in and of itself. But having to get up in front of a group of your peers and present it, is probably the hardest part. Have some respect. Try to remember the Golden Rule. If you spent time putting together something and were standing in front of 40+ people presenting it, would you want others talking or acting like caged monkeys through your presentation? I think not. If you must absolutely talk to someone, politely get up and leave the meeting until you're done. These talks take a lot of time and effort, at least respect the fact that someone is trying to contribute.

Okay, I feel better getting that out there, and I feel really strong about it. So think about it, and try not to be one of those people. Quick Note, Since Defcon Falls on the first Friday of the month in August, we will be having the 2600 meeting on the second Friday in August. This way the few that aren't going to Defcon still get their fix. That's about all I have for July. So make sure your bags are packed and you have some spending cash because the next time I see you guys, we'll be on our way to Defcon. See ya in August - Grifter

6.7.2002 23.13.37 MST - Bewm! and June is over. Just one more meeting till DefCon, but I'll talk more about that in a little bit. Good attendance at this meeting, and even more new faces. I am dead set on the fact that if everyone showed up to the 2600 meetings, we'd have 50+ people there.

We had two talks this month. Mutilator did a talk on Linux Transparent Firewalls, it was really interesting, and he talked about it's real world application at his place of employment. I gave a talk on Social Engineering. It was a fun talk, since basically you're trying to teach people how to lie really really good. So it went over well. I guess rudeboy had a talk, but we ended up finishing up the defcon talking late in the meeting, so he'll give it next month.

Keeping tradition with the last few months, we finished up the talks with plans for DefCon. It still seems like quite a few people are going. Last year almost everyone who said they were going punked out. This year has been different, I think only two people that told me they were going have said that they won't be able to make it. We talked about the roadtrip and the things we have planned for it. The Van of Justice rides again!! And this year we will be broadcasting Roadtrip radio all the way to the con. We are also going to try and setup a wireless LAN so we can IRC on the way to the Alexis Park. I will post more details on the roadtrip page soon.

I don't really know what else to say. My mind is racing at the thought of how close DefCon is. Most of you probably think I'm a freak for loving it so much. But it really is one of the few things I really enjoy. For those that haven't been yet, you will know exactly what I mean soon enough. That's all I have. See ya in July - Grifter

5.3.2002 23.42.17 MST - The May meeting is over and gone. We had a good turn out this month. Had a few new faces show up too, I think about six. And some more travelers from out of state. This time from Oklahoma. They also liked our meeting, so we must be doing something right.

This month turned out to be radio month for 2600 Salt Lake City. Manic Velocity gave a talk on pirate radio, and talked about a good book to get if people had more of an intrest in it. A, gave a talk on Intro to Ham Radio. i brought my Ham Radio. And last but certainly not least, Rudeboy brought an FM transmitter with him. So as you can see, the FCC would have had a field day with us.

More talk of DefCon as it draws ever closer. We are going to have a hell of a turnout this year. I would say that everyone was blowing smoke, except for the fact that they have all got rooms reserved. So we will be representing hardcore this year at DCX.

That's all I have for this month. If we had one meeting where everyone showed up we would have a sick crowd of people, probably fifty or more. We should work on that. See ya in June. - Grifter

4.5.2002 22.52.26 MST - The April meeting was a pretty good meeting. Not that we ever have really bad meetings anymore. It has been a year since we started doing talks at 2600, and things have gone really well since then. We had some visitors this month from out of town. Gweeds from rotten.com, and his girlfriend, who I believe goes by Hep. It was nice having people from out of state show up to our local 2600 meeting and actually like the layout.

While I was the only one that gave a talk this month, I think it went over well. I gave a talk on Dumpster Diving. It caused a lot of people to participate since a lot of people have been dumpster diving, or want to go. Gweeds told us how you could eat old food out of dumpsters since grocery stores throw out things that just expire. He said it's fun to cook your friends food with stuff you found in dumpsters then tell them they were eating trash. Good Times.

We talked some more about DefCon, and prepared a little more for the trip out there in August. I got a few more bits of information for the Roadtrip page, so that's good. Gweeds took this opportunity to tell us why DefCon is an evil corporation and we had a good back and forth debate over it. Which is nice. I love to argue.

That's about all that went down this month. Not much else to say. Go read my talk, and look at some photos. See ya in May. - Grifter

3.1.2002 23.57.21 MST - The March meeting is over and all is well. It wasn't a bad meeting all in all. We had two talks this month. One given by A on DVD Ripping. The other by myself on SAM Files and NT Password Hashes. I continue to the fabulous tradition of newbie style talks. I know it may seem lame to some, but I like to lay the foundation for things, and going over password hashes just seemed like something good to talk about. Oh, and I gave a little demonstration on how to inject hashes into the SAM file using chntpw which seemed like it caught the attention of a few.

We talked about DefCon for awhile. I have come to the realization that there are exactly five months till we arrive at DefCon and there is a lot of planning to do in that time. So to all of you reading this that don't have a room, call this number 1.800.822.2228 and make a reservation before rooms sell out. I will not have two hundred people sleeping on my floor this year, you will sleep by the pool if you don't have a room. I will start on the 4th Annual 801 Roadtrip page soon, so as you get your information, fire it over to me. One interesting thing came out of this months meeting, Oshu and I are going to plan to speak at DefCon this year. Nervous?, Stoked? The answer to both of those questions is Yes. What if I screw up? What if I'm up there and I get a hard-on? Oh the humiliation!!!

Anyway, we also had a bunch of us take a picture for the DefCon around the world section of defcon.org. We stood in front of the giant banner that's draped over the church headquarters building wearing DC shirts. It was cold, people thought we were weird, blah blah blah.

Okay, I am done rambling for this month. You are all lazy and need to write a talk for next month. It's nice to know we are probably the most productive 2600 meeting in existence, and it's nice to share. Remember sharing? It's what the teacher told you to do with the blocks in kindergarten. So put down the blocks and pick up the keyboard, it's sharing time. I don't want to hear the excuse that you don't have a topic to write on, that is lame. Well, I'm done telling you what to do. So go do it! See ya in April. - Grifter

2.1.2002 23.26.44 MST - The February meeting started off well. Adept brought a case of Bawls. For those of you that don't know what Bawls is, it's a high Caffiene drink. Everyone was happy about that and got to drink till their hearts exploded. I don't think anyone was happier about it than Influx, if you want to know what I mean, go check out the photos section.

This month was another good month for content. We had four talks in all and they were pretty good. Mutilator gave a talk on Caller-ID spoofing and some projects he's been working on with that. We had a new face this month, Oshu. Oshu gave a talk on DSniff use and Abuse. For this being his first meeting it wqs nice to see he gave a talk. He was also not talking out of his ass, which helps, I ike people that know what they're talking about. Manic Velocity gave a talk on Footprinting, using Me as his target. Thanks Manic *Wink*. And the guy who's handle I can never remember gave a short demo of SQL vulnerabilities. So like I said. Good Month.

After the meeting about 12 of us rolled out to Macaroni Grill and ate very well courtesy of a gift certificate from Adepts' boss. Bonus!! I don't really have much to say this month, no one tried to ass rape me, which was nice. So any month where I retain function of all body parts is a good one in my book. I hope we get some good talks next month, and with that. See ya in March. - Grifter

1.4.2002 23.55.23 MST - January of 2002, the year that the Olympics will arrive in our home of Salt Lake City. I bet this is going to suck. Well, the meeting didn't suck this month and was a great way to start out a new year. We had 3 talks and some new faces. We also had a few old faces show up, it's nice when people go missing for a few months then turn up and just roll with it like they were never gone.

Ahh, but the way it started, that's a story in itself. Signingis and I got to the meeting about twenty minutes early which has been alright lately since people have been showing up relatively early. Well he goes to get a sandwich and I'm left alone setting up my laptop to work on my unfinished talk. So there I am and this wack job of a guy keeps answering the phone which seems to be in a state of perpetual ringing. He notices me noticing him so he stares at me. Here goes our dialog.

Grifter: How's it goin?
Nutcase: You know there's a miniature cell phone hovering right here?
(Holds his hand slightly above the payphone which has again begun to ring)
Nutcase: You want to answer it?
Grifter: No Thanks.
Nutcase: You know the computer (Points at my laptop) is an extension of our personalities.
Grifter: Yes, it is.
(Glares at me)
Nutcase: The Intelligences will save us, they have too.
Grifter: Really?
Nutcase: They have to, there can't be this much pain in the world without having a way out.
Grifter: *Blink* *Blink*
Nutcase: I have a friend that turned himself into a scorpion and lives in the Nevada desert somewhere between here and San Jose. He couldn't take all the pain. He had the choice to become either a snake or a scorpion. And now he can be killed by you or by me. (Raising his voice) He did it because of the pain!
(By now a few other 2600 goers have shown up)
Grifter: Wow, he turned into a scorpion?
(The Nutcase explodes and leans over the bar towards me)
Nutcase: I'M TRYING TO WARN YOU!!!
Grifter: I know.
Nutcase: I AM!!! THE INTELLIGENCES WILL COME FOR US!!!
Grifter: I KNOW! THANK YOU!
Nutcase: No, Thank You.
(Nutcase Exits shouting as he leaves the Food Court)

Turns out Signingis was the one ringing the phone while he went for some food. So thanks man, for almost getting me molested by a crazy guy.

The rest of the meeting was great though. Tierra gave his first talk on Windows XP Raw Sockets. And I Gave a talk on The inner workings of TraceRoute which about 4 people enjoyed, and another on Military Phone Systems, which everyone seemed to enjoy. So all in all a good month, no one died, thankfully, and there was some good content. So that about wraps it up. See ya in February. - Grifter
