12.07.2001 23.49.56 MST - Ah yes, another month down, another year down, my how the time has flown. December was a good way to end the year. We had three talks this month and they didn't go too badly. We were crowded in the food court due to all the Christmas shoppers and their jolly asses filled the whole place up, so there were Hackers next to normal people. Boy did the heads turn when the talks started. People had this look on their faces like they had just become witness to the oddest poetry reading of their lives. It was unsettling having all those eyes on you, but it felt good knowing that they didn't understand a word. The normal people that is, although, the "hackers" seemed to be having a rough time themselves. J I(Grifter) gave a talk on VNC. ManicVelocity did a talk on BIOS. And ProtomanX blessed us with his first talk on Mac OSX. I like when meetings go the way they went this month. We screw around for awhile, talk about the latest news and events, wait for people to arrive, and start the talks. After the talks are over it's back to talking. People have told me that a 2600 meeting in Salt Lake City was a waste of time. They have said that it was hopeless. That nothing good would ever come from it. At times I almost believed them, and at times I almost gave up. It would be so much easier for me to just call it a loss and just go to the bar at 8 o' clock; let the newbies have it, and turn it into a circus. But I have seen far too many people say that it is hopeless, whine about how the days of old are gone and do nothing. I have chosen to do something. And I have not wasted my time. Since April, when the talks started, I have seen amazing growth in the meetings. Not necessarily by numbers, although we're not doing bad there either, but in the intellectual conversations that are held. The talks are there because when we're done having them, people are more prone to discuss the topics given. I practically beg everyone that attends to write one, no matter what it is on, and we usually get one or two. But that is a success. And I hope to see many more successes in the year to come. So as this year comes to a close I'd like to thank all of you that come out to the meetings, but most of all, I'd like to thank those of you that contribute. Thanks for proving to me that I'm not wasting my time. See ya next year - Grifter
11.02.2001 23.26.47 MST - Another month has come and gone and November was another good one. We had a good turnout, which has become, I am happy to say, pretty much standard. It's nice to see that something that we thought was impossible has turned out so well, that being a 2600 Meeting in Utah. I showed up at a few minutes before five and was amazed that there were about six people already hanging out, waiting for others to show up themselves. It was nice to see people there on time actually, no one ever shows up to the meetings at five, it was a nice change. We did however still hold off until six to start the talks to make sure we gave ample time to those wanting to attend. That's right, this month was another month with talks. Although I was disappointed in the number of talks given. I bribed everyone with a DC9 shirt last month to write the best talk and what did I get...one. Well, one official actually typed out talk from Signingis. So he gave a talk on "The History of Cryptography" and got himself a t-shirt. Then A stepped up and gave a talk from the top of his head, kind of an intro to wireless. Then I talked a little about XP and what we can expect from it. So one official talk, but throw in two unofficial and you get three. Not half bad. People kept asking what I was going to give away next month for the best talk, the answer to that is nothing. I figured I'd give it a shot and see if maybe people would put more effort into it if they knew they were going to get something. The answer is no, which might be okay after all, it means that they're just lazy, not greedy. So with that I'll bring this month to a close. I hope we get some good talks next month even without the bribe. See ya in December - Grifter
10.5.2001 22.14.34 MST - October was a good month. We had new faces. We had a few talks and demos. All around good conversation, and it was productive as far as Iam concerned. I love it when meetings go the way they went this month. It makes me feel like maybe it's not a lost cause, and I'm not wasting my time. I arrived at the food court at 5:00 and waited for others to drag their butts in. There was a decent amount of people there by 6:00 so Manic Velocity gave a talk on the SirCam worm. He actually wrote it a few months ago and originally planned to give the talk in August, but we had the DMCA/Dmitry protest that month so it was put on hold. Adept was going to give a wireless demonstartion using a projector he bought a few weeks ago, but the sun was a little too bright for it to show up on the wall properly. Maybe as it gets darker earlier during the next few months we might be able to put it to use. He still gave the wireless demonstration, but we just had everyone gather around his laptop and watch what he was doing instead. We went outside around 8:00 and tried to pick up on some wireless networks. When we hit one we sat in front of the statue of Brigham Young near Temple Square and the wireless demo took on more of a real world aspect. You could see how the network showed up on Netstumbler, as well as watch the packets of information fly past. I felt like it was a good learning experience for all there, and more importantly, everyone was having a good time. After about an hour, and a little bit of "WarStrolling" Adept, Mutilator, and I did a little bit of Wardriving and then headed to the bar. People seemed to like the wireless stuff and I think it just helped confirm the fact that Wireless is the future of hacking. I have layed down a bribe for those of you that haven't heard. The person who has the best talk next month will get this T-Shirt from DC9. It will be decided by a vote of your peers, so make it good. Well that's all I have to say for this month. I hope Next month is as good as this month was. See ya in November - Grifter
9.7.2001 23.42.20 MST - September will not be updated until I get pictures from Syntax. - Grifter
8.3.2001 23.17.09 MST - August was a good month. While we didn't meet in the food court as usual we had a very productive meeting. This month we protested the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the release of Russian programmer Dmitry Sklyarov. It was productive, and all in all, a good time. We met at the state capitol at 5pm with signs and fliers in hand and practically stood in the road. We had a good turnout, probably 35 people throughout, at least 20 there at all times. We handed fliers through car windows and had people honking at the "Honk if you Support free Speech" sign. It probably took about 15-20 minutes for the cops to show up, which was kool. They basically wanted to make sure that we were keeping everything safe and that they weren't going to have to bash in someone's skull. We were visited by the Utah State troopers, the Salt Lake Police Department, and the Utah Highway patrol, so we had a good turn out from law enforcement too. Hopefully we got the word out to a few people, most of the people that talked to us didn't know anything about the DMCA or the Sklyarov case, which seems pretty typical. If you take away someone's rights bit by bit, they may never know they lost them. It started to rain pretty hard so we headed over to the mall and got something to eat and basically sat around and talked till about 9pm. So while August was a little out of the ordinary, I was pleased with it, and I think a lot of others were also. That's about all I have for this month, hopefully next month will be productive and a few people will write a talk. So...Thanks for reading this, and for stopping by. See ya in September - Grifter
7.6.2001
23.46.12 MST - Yet another meeting without
an agenda. For having absolutely no structure, this meeting actually went
well. The guys from the Ogden meeting sent a representative to confirm
all future plans for DefCon and when we would be meeting up with them.
"I represent O-Town" I believe were the words used by Com4 himself.
So we will be meeting at Midnight Wednesday/Thursday, and arriving in
Vegas around 7am. Other than that, we talked a bit about telephone systems
(Welcome Back DayInsane), and just bullshitted about anything that seemed
to come to mind, including films, especially A.I.
6.1.2001
22.32.47 MST - Another month down the drain.
The meeting was a good one, although it started off slow. There weren't
that many people there this month, well, I guess the number of people
was about the same, but people were just coming and going at different
times so it always seemed like the crowd was small.
5.4.2001
23.49.16 MST - May has come and gone, well
at least the meeting has, and all was well. It was a good meeting and
it ended with a bit of excitement.
4.6.2001
22.24.09 MST - Well, the April meeting went
really well. This month was the first actual implementation of the ever
fabled 2600 meeting. By that I mean, it had structure. We have talked
about doing a structured 2600 meeting for some time, and this month we
finally did it. We are trying to have mini defcons, basically we wait
till 6 so everyone can get there, and then talks are given on different
topics chosen by the speaker and people can ask questions during or wait
till they're through. Then once the talks are over, it's just a social
gathering, but I believe by working with this structure people are more
apt to talk about things related to security and the like.
3.2.2001 23.59.59 MST - Everyone keeps telling me to update the page, so I'll update it. I hated March, it was a disgrace, basically if I ever see a meeting like that again, I'm never going to 2600 again. People stealing and breaking shit is totally unkool at the meetings, we don't need that kind of attention. It was a stark contrast from last month, which was actually good. So the April meeting is gonna get some regulation. Sounds worse than it is actually. I'm gonna give a talk and Adept has one planned. We'll see how things go, one last chance. - Grifter
2.2.2001 22.16.42 MST - Well the February meeting marked one year since I started doing the 2600 SLC site, and we have certainly come a long way. The last meeting was a good one, but I think this was probably my favorite one thus far. The conversations are getting better and more interesting over all. People bring something to talk about and there's never a dull moment. It started off with me meeting a newcomer named Roger, he was a welcome addition and we talked about old OS's like MULTICS, Minix, etc.. and old hardware, like resurrecting 286's and how you just end up with more old computer crap then you know what to do with. Personally, I'm gonna keep an old model computer from each time during my rise in computer knowledge, and on those old computers will run only the old software that would have been running on them at the time when they were top notch. But hey that's just me, I'm a geek like that. Everyone talked about the new issue of 2600 at one time or another which reminded me about the CueCat giveaway at Radio Shack. I had already gotten one a few days earlier, but about twelve people took off to Rat Shack to pick up a few. You can see the pictures of their outing on Manics site. Adept and Niquil networked their laptops with a hub that Adept apparently pulled out of his ass. This is all good if that's what you want to do, but sitting at a 2600 meeting looking at files on your own computer seems kind of odd to me. Ain't that right Muti? F8l Error brought a bunch of numbers he gleaned from some telco docs he found, and joined by Neural Impulse they tried to figure out what kind of good stuff they found. If memory serves me correctly they found some pretty interesting things. Well at least in the toll free range of numbers. Myself, F8l Error, and a few others had a pretty good conversation on Urban Exploration and the possibilities of some good outings in the Salt Lake area. I really want to get in the tunnels under the city, so if anyone knows anything about them or any kool places in general, please drop me an e-mail and tell me what you know, or what you've heard. Hopefully once we're heading out and documenting our exploits, we'll have a site up with pictures and maps of where we've been. Well that should do it for the month of February, it was a good month and this year is shaping up to be a good one. Hopefully the meetings continue to progress at the rate they have been, and we'll keep having a good time. Well thanks for reading this, and for stopping by, see ya in March - Grifter
1.5.2001 23.35.53 MST - Well it was the first meeting of 2001 and I must say, not too shabby. We had an excellent turnout, which has become the norm lately, I don't even bother to count anymore. It's nice to see the meetings become more than just a few lost souls trying to figure out something to do on a Friday night. This meeting was all about Visors, who had what, and who wanted what the other guy had. Like I said last month, this is definitely the toy for the this year. We beamed software to each other and played around for awhile. A subject that came up continually was DefCon. There's only six months till the next one and it's time to start planning. I will be setting up some things on defcon.hektik.org pretty soon too, kind of like a DefCon survival guide. This way those of you who've never been, know how much to save and what to bring. We're feeling the itch already folks, start saving your pennies. The Post-2600 meeting was fun as always. I'll swear until the day I die that they out something in those cheese fries to keep us coming back. They're getting to know us there though which is nice. Now when we come in they just set up a tab and let it run till we're ready to go. We talked about Cell Phones and Guns most of the time, Since Serpent just got a kick ass firearm. I won't go into details but you'd all be jealous. If we could just get people to stop playing lame ass songs on the jukebox we'd be set. Well before I go I'd just like to throw some kudos out there... The Mac Kids went all out this month and brought all kinds of old school Mac crap to play with, full working systems of course. They played with that for awhile and kept themselves entertained. I don't know if everyone knows about the Mac Kids (That's just what I call em') but they all go to Judge together and for some odd reason are totally and hopelessly in love with their Macs. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not putting them down, Hell I still use Windows along side Linux, so who am I to talk. It's just odd to see so many Mac users in one place. The oddest thing about them is that they're always together, I mean always, they're friends outside of the meetings too, and they never leave each other. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is I'm proud of these guys, when they first started coming I was a little skeptical, I just figured it made them feel kool to come to the meetings, but they're definitely learning something (I have no idea where), but they are, so it's nice to see. I mean the 2600 meetings are always looked forward to and well received by this bunch. And if having the meetings helped increase their knowledge and awareness of hacking at all, then even if we never have another meeting again, we were a total success. So to Manic Velocity, Protoman X, Orson Berserker, and Chem Burn, thanks for coming guys and for contributing, see ya in February - Grifter
